Social connections can help us feel a sense of belonging, purpose, and create emotional support. In our care homes, social connections can provide our residents with a sense of community, and improve their mental health. Another way in which we maintain social connections is through technology. Social media and video calls can help our residents stay connected with their families and friends who live far away. It can provide them with a way to stay connected, share their experiences, and feel engaged with the outside world.
How we give our residents a social life
- Social events: We organise social events like game nights, movie nights, and dance sessions, which our residents love to get involved in! These events provide an opportunity for residents to interact with each other and most importantly, have fun!
- Encourage family and friend visits: Families and friends of residents are encouraged to come and visit all the time. In addition, this helps towards our residents emotional well-being.
- Create shared spaces: Whenever the sun is shining we encourage our residents to get outside in the garden and take in the fresh air and sun. Some even enjoy a tipple with their new friends!
- Bring in therapy animals: Whether that’s a therapy dog or an alpaca, our residents love a visit from furry friends! We plan organised visits from local animal centres to ensure our residents and family members are aware before we bring them in.
Social connections are crucial for maintaining good mental health in care homes. At Athena Healthcare Group we will continue to promote activities, visits from furry friends and open spaces to help residents maintain social connections. Futhermore, this can ensure our residents feel happier, healthier, and more engaged with their community.
