Pet Therapy: Why all care homes should bring pets in for their residents

NEW

Let’s just start with the obvious, who doesn’t see or stroke a pet and feel some sort of happiness? They provide us with unconditional love that is different from any other type of love, a love that can never be broken. They give us comfort when we need it most, they don’t judge us, they love us for who we are. Pet therapy doesn’t just make us feel comforted but it can take away anxiety and loneliness. Therefore, as we are a person-centered approach company we want to shine a light on pet therapy to show how important it really is. This blog post will cover the benefits of why and how care homes should introduce pet therapy.

A few benefits of pet therapy

Relaxation.

Simply stroking an animal releases endorphins, which soothe the body and mind, particularly those suffering from memory loss caused by aging.

Comfort.

Animals help to relieve anxiety with their calming source of support and reassurance. We feel more emotionally stable and loved when we receive unconditional affection from our pets. We can feel comforted, joyous, and happy when we stroke a pet. Just touching an animal relieves sensory stress and fulfills our need for touch.

Loneliness.

After traumatic experiences, like losing a loved one or being ill, time spent with animals can boost emotional wellbeing. The interaction with animals can also be particularly helpful when dealing with loss, loneliness, and other situations that might otherwise trigger depression or anxiety. People, including those in care homes, can reduce any feelings of social isolation through pet therapy.

Self Esteem.

People often smile or speak more in the presence of a pet because animals have a unique way of bringing them out of themselves. Boosting social wellbeing through animal-assisted therapies can help people build self-confidence, reduce anxiety and improve verbal communication and interactions with others.

Warmth.

As simple as it may be, hugging or even just touching a pet can make a person feel warm and cozy inside. It’s that simple…

Activities to get residents connected to animals.

1. Throw & Fetch

2. Grooming

3. Cuddling

4. Tug of War

5. Giving treats

6. Bathing

That’s a wrap.

So, this is why all care homes should include pet therapy in their activities. Everyone deserves peace and happiness in their life and pets can make us feel just that. Therefore, let’s spread more love and compassion around care homes by bringing in pets so we can give residents a feeling they all well and truly deserve, love.
